Animal board invited review: OneARK: Strengthening the links between animal production science and animal ecology ArchiMer
Destoumieux-garzón, Delphine; Bonnet, P.; Teplitsky, C.; Criscuolo, F.; Henry, P.-y.; Mazurais, David; Prunet, P.; Salvat, Gilles; Usseglio-polatera, P.; Verrier, E.; Friggens, N.c..
Wild and farmed animals are key elements of natural and managed ecosystems that deliver functions such as pollination, pest control and nutrient cycling within the broader roles they play in contributing to biodiversity and to every category of ecosystem services. They are subjected to global changes with a profound impact on the natural range and viability of animal species, the emergence and spatial distribution of pathogens, land use, ecosystem services and farming sustainability. We urgently need to improve our understanding of how animal populations can respond adaptively and therefore sustainably to these new selective pressures. In this context, we explored the common points between animal production science and animal ecology to identify promising...

Quantitative genetic variation for post-stress cortisol and swimming performance in growth-selected and control populations of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Porte, J. D.; Auperin, B.; Dupont-nivet, M.; Vergnet, Alain; Valotaire, C.; Claireaux, Guy; Prunet, P.; Chatain, Beatrice.
Sea bass is a major species in Mediterranean aquaculture, and is now being subject to selective breeding programs for faster growth. In terrestrial species, it was demonstrated that fast growth may be linked to a correlated degradation of fitness traits. In this experiment, we evaluated 600 young sea bass from a factorial mating of 76 sires and 13 dams. The sires were from four genetic groups, wild (W), domesticated (D), and selected for growth (2 groups, M and P). The 600 offspring were submitted to two acute confinement stress challenges at 6 weeks intervals, and plasma cortisol at one hour post stress was measured. The same fish were also submitted to two swimming challenges at a 5 days interval, where the maximum sustained swimming speed (Umax) of each...

Recent advances in EST sequencing in Crassostrea gigas: towards the sequencing of the Pacific oyster genome ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Huvet, Arnaud; Lapegue, Sylvie; Sauvage, Christopher; Tanguy, A.; Moraga, D.; Goostrey, A.; Prunet, P.; Boulo, Viviane; Gueguen, Y.; Moal, Jeanne; Fleury, Elodie; Samain, Jean-francois; Mathieu, M.; Favrel, P..
Rationale for EST and genome sequencing of the Pacific oyster: • its membership of the Lophotrochozoa, an little studied branch of the Eukaryotes, • its worldwide aquacultural importance (4.2 million metric tons, worth 3.5 billion US dollars), • its high fecundity, with concomitantly high DNA polymorphism, • its use as a biosensor of coastal pollution. In 2004, an international community of biologists, the Oyster Genome Consortium (OGC) led by D. Hedgecock (University of Southern California) and uniting 70 participants from 10 countries, first presented the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas as a genome-sequencing candidate to Joint Genome Institute (JGI, USA) (Hedgecock et al., 2005). Besides this project (that remains to be accepted), several EST...
